ECOTEXNANO

Safe use of nanomaterials in the textile finishing industry.

ECO-TEXNANO project is aimed to design an innovative tool to improve risk assessment and promote the safe use of nanomaterials in the textile finishing industry.

Considering the priority areas of LIFE+ the key aims of this project are to:

- Provide the textile finishing industry a user-friendly tool to improve the knowledge on risk assessment of nanomaterials and to promote the safe use along their life cycle.

- Identify and reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts carrying out a comprehensive Life Cycle.

Assessment and Risk Assessment of the selected nanomaterials:

- Demonstration of two pilot scale trials in order to provide evidence of best practice in the application of nano-based techniques comparing with the conventional finishing chemicals.

- Increase the professional’s knowledge base concerning nanomaterials for the further development of human health and environmental EU policy such us REACH, BREF for textile sector, Regulation of biocidal products and CLP Regulation.

- Improve the competitiveness of the EU textile sector, obtaining a higher value product.

- Exchange data and disseminate the project results for potential stakeholders.

- Increase consumer’s awareness on the HSE impacts of the textile sector using nanomaterials.

ACTIONS

• Preparatory actions.

Considering the new properties of nanomaterials, ecotexnano will make a selection and state of the art of the most representative on finishing processes in textiles.

Analyze the current requirements for health and chemical safety assessment in the context of REACH and other environmental standards.

Define a general structure and composition of the tool, which should include entries such as functionality of textile, types of finishing textile processes, conventional finishing textile processes, nano-based finishing textile processes, types of nanomaterials used for finishing textiles and space for knowledge sharing.

Finally an identification of stakeholders and key actors will be done, to ensure the future implementation of the project results.

  • A1 State of the art and selection of representative nanomaterials

STATUS: Completed

Outcome: Report on the State of the Art and representative nanomaterials of finished textiles

  • A2 Information requirements to complete the CSA of NM in the context of REACH and other environmental standards

STATUS: Completed

Outcome: Report on REACH and other current environmental requirements for a sustainable use of nanomaterials in finishing textile processes

  • A3 Identification of the EcoTexNano tool functionalities

STATUS: Completed

Outcome: Report on List of functionalities and general structure of the EcoTexNano tool

  • A4 Identification of stakeholders and key actors

STATUS: Completed

Outcome: Identification of “relevant stakeholders and key actors

 • Implementation actions.

The environmental, health and safety potential risk assessment, of the use of nanomaterials during finishing processes of textiles, will provide us with information to develop specific recommendations. All this knowledge will enable us to define a proposal for updating the BREF for the Textile Industry Sector, REACH requirement for the registration dossier of nanosubstances and other UE rules. Two pilot scale trials will be carried out in different manufacturing companies.

Designing and development of the ecotexnano tool. The ecotexnano tool will be an innovative and user-friendly web based tool to improve knowledge on risk assessment and promote the safe use of nanomaterials in the textile finishing industry. Its structure and composition will include entries such as functionality of textile, types of finishing textile processes, conventional versus nano-based finishing textile processes, a space for knowledge sharing, environmental and risk assessment.

• Monitoring the impact of the project actions.

The objective of these actions is setting a base line scenario which measures the starting degree of knowledge, monitoring the enhancement of knowledge and the variations of the RCR (risk characterization ratios) during the project and quantifying the environmental and socio-economic impact.

  • C1 Define starting situation (baseline scenario)

STATUS: Completed

Outcome 1: Template of questionnaire on base line scenario.

Outcome 2: Baseline scenario data. Conclusions have allowed establishing the baseline scenario of the Ecotexnano project.

  • C2 Strengthening of the knowledge based on nanomaterials properties and risk assessment

STATUS: Completed

  • C3 Integrative assessment of risk characterization ratios when implementing risk management measures

STATUS: Completed

  • C4 Environmental impact assessment

STATUS: Completed

  • C5 Socio-economic impact assessment on local economy and population

STATUS:Completed

• Communication and dissemination actions.

The dissemination of the project and its outcomes is considered one of the fundamental pillars for the proper implementation of the project and the achievement of its main objective. A communication and dissemination plan will be developed, including the creation of the project website, printable material, the layman’s report and other dissemination actions.
